Pre-Trial Supervision

This level of supervision is intended to provide control to a group of

selected defendants who have been charge with a crime, but have not yet been adjudicated. Pretrial supervision must balance the defendant's rights with the court's concern that the defendant may pose a risk to society, his/herself, or others. Assessing this risk permits more defendants to be safely released from incarceration while the case is pending but also provides protection for the community. Identifying high risk/high need allows the court to not only make appropriate decisions regarding bond, but commissions the court to utilize counseling services as well as more intense forms of community control such as GPS and SCRAM. These resources are used to supplement basic pretrial supervision in high risk/high need cases pertaining to domestic violence, sexual crimes, and repeat alcohol offenders. As a condition of release the defendant is placed on one of these services for the duration of the case, thus decreasing the potential risk and increasing the protection for the community. Through these evidence based practices Pretrial Services is able to effectively identify risk and protect the rights of the accused as well as the community.

Average Monthly # of Participants is 80, 5 of which are courtesy supervision for the Miami County Common Pleas Court.
